Mobilizing for the “D5” WTO March & Rally

Dear Greg:

Excitement is building for the Saturday, December 5th (“D5”) march and rally against the World Trade Organization.  AWPPW is one of more than 55 organizational endorsers of this demonstration — thank you!

I’m writing today to share some resources for mobilizing your members for the event, and to ask your help recruiting a couple of volunteers from within your ranks.  Below are a few ways you can help make D5 a major success.

Turnout:  Turnout from your organization is crucial.  Please mobilize through…

·      Meetings:  Please continue to encourage members to turn out for D5 during any and all upcoming meetings.  We have a quarter-sheet leaflet and talking points about the march and rally available online.  We also have a 16-page booklet about the WTO available, called “The Spirit of Seattle Lives.” If you’d like us to come and present at a meeting, we’ll be glad to do so.  Just call (503) 736-9777.
·      Newsletters:  Please continue to promote D5 in your newsletter.  We have a template newsletter article and a template event listing about the march and rally available online.  If you’d like us to customize an article for your newsletter, we’ll be glad to do so.  Just call (503) 736-9777.
·      Email Blasts:  Please send an email announcement about D5 to your members now, and again a few days before the demonstration.  We have a template email blast available online.  If you’d like us to customize an email for your list, we’ll be glad to do so.  Just call (503) 736-9777.
·      Flyers:  Please post flyers about D5 at your workplace and wherever else your members congregate.  A PDF of the flyer is available online.  If you’d like union-printed copies, please call (503) 736-9777.

Volunteers:  We could use your help recruiting two or more volunteers from your organization to serve as marshals during the march.  Marshals will help keep the march moving smoothly, and will lead in chants.  They should report-to-duty at 11:30 am under the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge on the day of the march to receive some quick training and their specific assignments.  Please forward the names and contact info of volunteers to Chris Ferlazzo at chris@jwjpdx.org

D5 Logistics:  Demonstrators are gathering at 12:00 noon in downtown Portland along Tom McCall Waterfront Park under the Hawthorne Bridge.  The march begins at 1:00 pm, going past the World Trade Center, Federal Building and Wells Fargo Building.  The indoor rally and concert starts at Portland State University at approximately 2:00 pm, wrapping up by 4:00 pm.

Caravans:  Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice is organizing a bus to the D5 rally.  For details, please call (541) 482-8288.  The Lane County Labor Council is also organizing a caravan from the Eugene/Springfield area.  For details, please email eugene@december5.org.  If you’re interested in carpools from other parts of the state, or from Seattle, please call (503) 736-9777.

Tabling:  Groups interested in tabling under the Hawthorne Bridge between noon at 1:00 pm are welcome to do so.  You must provide your own table and other equipment.  Set-up time is from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.  Breakdown is between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm.  To RSVP, please email involved@december5.org

Other Events:  Teach-ins, parties and creative actions related to the WTO are planned in the run-up to D5 throughout the state.  One highlight includes the “WTO 2009 Teach-in & Celebration” in Eugene on Saturday, November 21.  For details, please visit www.december5.org or call (503) 736-9777.

Organizing Meeting:  Our next Portland Organizing Committee meeting is on Thursday, November 5 at 6:30 pm at the AFSCME Council 75 building at 6025 E. Burnside.  If you have ideas on how to make the march, rally or turnout stronger, this is the place to send a representative.

Thanks again for endorsing and for all your help making D5 as big and powerful an event as possible.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (503) 736-9777 or orftc@citizenstrade.org.

In solidarity,

     Arthur Stamoulis
